A Property Evaluation Before Work Is Scoped

We dispatch a contractor to inspect the site before making a recommendation. We pay particular attention to grading and drainage because water infiltration is a leading cause of premature pavement failure.

The evaluation may consider:

Existing surface and base: The condition of the current pavement and the material supporting it
Slope and drainage: The direction water travels across and away from the proposed driveway
Road connection: The entrance, driveway apron, and any nearby curb, gutter, or sidewalk
Access and layout: How vehicles enter, exit, park, and reach the property

These findings guide the recommended scope. A badly cracked, uneven, or poorly drained surface may require different work than pavement with an intact base and surface wear.

How We Install an Asphalt Driveway

The construction scope depends on the property’s existing conditions, work-area access, and drainage patterns. A complete plan addresses the pavement structure below the surface as well as the visible asphalt.

Depending on the property, the project scope may include:

Site measurement: Reviewing the proposed driveway area, road connection, and available work access
Surface preparation: Removing or preparing existing material based on its condition
Subgrade and base preparation: Evaluating and preparing the layers that support the pavement
Grading and drainage: Establishing the planned slope and accounting for water movement across the site
Asphalt placement: Installing the paved surface and completing the specified edge treatment
Final cleanup: Clearing installation debris from the defined work area

Pasadena Driveway Permits & County Requirements

County approval may apply when driveway work changes the entrance to a road. Anne Arundel County may require a Residential Driveway Access Permit for a new or modified residential entrance onto a county road, whether or not the project removes or replaces curb and gutter.

The county reviews the entrance location, design geometry, drainage requirements, and pavement cross-section (the arrangement and depth of the pavement layers). Although a driveway may not require a building permit, project conditions can still trigger a Standard Grading Plan Application, grading permit, or Department of Public Works right-of-way approval.

If construction disturbs an existing sidewalk, curb, or gutter, county requirements call for replacement according to the alignment and grade specified by authorized county personnel. Because approval requirements depend on the road, property, and proposed work, homeowners should confirm what applies before construction begins.
